A Half-Baked Plan

…  set out to have a BBQ and walk 25km to find a room in Rogdia.

The BBQ went well – lemony chicken on the skillet is pretty wonderful.

Poppy was foolishly unconcerned about the swans.

Then up the hill to Rogdia – where night was falling.

Thanks D for coming to pick us up – there were no hotels open! and we would have had to bivouac in the olive groves. (I had my survival bag – whito probably wouldn’t have made it)

The Sad Case Of Orion

A couple of posts ago it was mentioned that Poppy was a sister. Unfortunately things weren’t to be.

In a street disconcertingly close to our house, Danae found a dog that was within minutes of dying. Unlike everyone else who passed by or refused to help – she carried the vomit and shit covered creature to the vets.

Over the next 4 days – with nightly visits from Danae – Orion started to slowly recover, and we made plans to bring him home. Of course D was now emotionally attached, and even I felt a bond, seeing his attempts to wiggle and roll over for us.

But the damage was already done.

My message for the culprit: there’s special treatment in Hell for dog poisoners.

Murder on Courgette Island.

Camping on Kolokithia

Jamie chose our site, carefully selecting the highest and most exposed position possible to weather the predicted lightening storm.  We took time to erect our metal tent structure, dawdling as the rain approached.   Poppy made herself useful by licking any exposed flesh and barking at the wind.

Finally, after  minutes of meticulous preparation and the consumption of all the beer rations we set off in search of a local taverna for much needed supplies.  We returned, much later,  in the dark, and began cooking partially frozen steaks on the new skillet.   The rain held off until we could consume our 4 course meal.   After some whisky we retired, leaving Poppy on guard duty against potential threats such as the waves and passing goats.

Morning came all too soon, and following a brief downpour we made coffee before some light drizzle set in.  A short drive home and we returned to Iraklio where we discovered that Poppy is a sister!! Hooray.

Whito.

My Brief Hiatus

I’d like to apologise for the disruption to service…. I’ve been getting over excited by an abundance of webapps, and of course I’ve fallen into a techy black-hole.

Equally I had spent a night putting together a slide show of some of my latest photos with an audio commentary. I laughed out loud while watching it with Danae – it was so boring, and didn’t pass quality control. To quote myself “and behind us there is a power station.

Anyway, for the web-inclined, this is what I’ve been playing with:

24Mb broadband my arse!

I know ‘upto’ 24Mb doesn’t mean you get 24Mb all the time – I’ve been told about 15Mb is average. Shockingly my ‘upto’ 24Mb connection is slower than my 1Mb connection. :-( Not once has it gone faster than my old connection…..What a pile of….
